Nine Lakes Tour North West Section (title)

Bassenthwaite, Crummockwater & Buttermere

F.gif (706 bytes)rom your accommodation, either head towards Braithwaite village and take the B5292 over the Whinlatter Pass - a steep climb to reach the top at 318 metres, or take the forest track from Thornthwaite to the top. The Forestry Commission Visitors Centre has a cafe here, so this is a possibility for a rest and an early coffee.

Loweswater F.gif (706 bytes)rom here, you follow route 3 on your map. A diversion off the route to Loweswater is recommended and here you will find the pretty Kirkstile Inn where you may stop off for lunch. If you take this option, then you will need to use the link route to Brackenthwaite before riding along the length of Crummock Water into Buttermere village.

T.gif (1079 bytes)here are two pubs in the village and the views here are spectacular. The climb out of Buttermere is very steep and some distance may have to be walked. This is forgotten however with the delightful ride down into the Newlands Valley, a very quiet secluded area . Route 3 will bring you back on to the road through Stair to Portinscale then onto the C2C back to your accommodation.. Veiw of Keswick

Ennerdale Water E.gif (677 bytes)nnerdale Water can be visited from Loweswater but add on another 15 miles for the return trip!! It is an undulating ride and quite steep in parts.
