L.gif (690 bytes)eave Ambleside to Clappersgate head for Elterwater village, then on to Chapel Stile, which is the largest village in Langdale. After the village, the spectacular peaks of the Langdale Pikes and the dome of Bowfell are ahead of you as you ride towards Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. Further on, the views from Blea Tarn are even more spectacular. You will also see the Wrynose Pass from here - fortunately, you don't have to go this way !!

A.gif (1049 bytes)t Little Langdale, there is an off-road track that is rough and stony in parts but is very quiet and avoids several miles of main road. In the centre of the village, just before the Three Shires Inn, you take a right turn and continue down to the footbridge on a gated track. This is rough in parts and you may prefer to walk. Please don't miss the very sharp left turn 100 yards after High Hallgarth.

Hawkshead Grammer School A.gif (1049 bytes)fter 2 miles, you will reach High Tilberthwaite where you rejoin a surfaced road for another 2 miles. At the T-junction on the A593, turn right for Coniston. A full circuit of the lake is a delightful ride (anticlockwise is best) but can be omitted if there is heavy traffic or less time is available. After Coniston, continue on route 6 past Tarn Hows and continue into Hawkshead. Continue along route 6 back into Ambleside.
