Route Description.

Allonby Route Map l.gif (690 bytes)arge free car parks in Allonby. Take road to Westnewton (opposite newsagent). Follow this road until you reach the village. Turn right at the pub onto the B5301 towards Aspatria.

i.gif (623 bytes)n Aspatria, turn left onto the A596 through the town, then turn right towards Threapland and Plumbland.

t.gif (1079 bytes)urn right in Threapland and go straight on through Plumbland. Go straight across at the junction with the B5301 then left at next T-junction towards Gilcrux.

t.gif (1079 bytes)urn right in Gilcrux, over the railway and over railway and River Ellen, then left to Allerby.

The Solway Firth

c.gif (1081 bytes)ross over A596 into village, then turn left. Turn right at junction with A596 for less than a mile then right again at Crosby to Crosscannonby.

g.gif (704 bytes)o straight on through village to meet the B5300. Turn right to return along this road to Allonby. Look out on your right for a lay-by where you will see steps upwards leading to the site of a Roman Fort. At roadside level are the remains of the Roman built salt pans, used for extracting salt from the sea water.
