Route Description.

Cockermouth & Bassenthwaite - Route Map w.gif (787 bytes)ith Wordsworth’s house behind you, turn left and follow the main street, turning left just after the bridge over the River Cocker. The river joins here with the River Derwent – you are now at "Cocker Mouth".

b.gif (712 bytes)ear left at the junction (signed Reivers Route) and take the first left again after 200 yards for the on-road route; for the off-road, carry straight on a little way past the school and turn onto the Allerdale Ramble and Reivers Route. Both routes join 500 yards before you turn left towards Isel and you descend to the River Derwent, crossing the bridge and turning immediately right.

a.gif (1049 bytes)fter 1½ miles, turn sharp left. (Straight over is the off-road Allerdale Ramble and Reivers Route to Castle Inn which gets very muddy and if you join this route, you will have a 2 miles ride along the A591 to rejoin the route at Bewaldeth.) Following the on-road route, turn right at the next junction to Bewaldeth and carry on 1 mile to meet the A591.

c.gif (1081 bytes)ross carefully and follow the lane uphill. After a climb, you are on Binsey Fell and the views across Bassenthwaite are wonderful – a good stop for a picnic. If you have time, you can climb to the top of Binsey, over the stile just before the next T-junction.

Derwent Water

t.gif (1079 bytes)urn right immediately after the bridge and second right to Higham Hall and golf course. This is a climb giving good views of the Lorton Valley before taking you down to Cockermouth. You can avoid the climb by carrying straight on instead of turning towards Higham Hall and then turn right at the bottom of the hill. The route takes you along the valley, through Embleton and on to Cockermouth.
