Route Description.

Loweswater & Mosser Fell - Route Map f.gif (706 bytes)rom the Post Office, head for High Mill and on to Low Swinside. The first section of the bridleway starts here taking you right and back to the road. To avoid this, cycle ½ mile past Lorton Park on you right and the school on your left and take the next left. Both routes join at Hopebeck. (If starting from Whinlatter Visitor Centre, take advantage of the C2C route to the start at Lorton: turn right out of the car park onto the B5292, fork left after 1½ miles and bearing right at the next fork for Low Lorton)

a.gif (1049 bytes)fter ½ mile, the road forks – bear right for on-road and left for off-road. For on-road, when you meet the b5289, turn left and bear right at the next fork for Loweswater. There is a good stop at Kirkstile Inn. For off-road, after 200 yards, join the bridleway through High and Low Hollins and down to the road. At the B5289, turn left for 1 miles past the woodland on your right and along the stream on your left until they both draw away.

p.gif (746 bytes)ick up the bridleway on your right to Scalehill and Bridge, turn left when you meet the road and climb to the village.

t.gif (1079 bytes)here is now a choice of on- or off-road round the lake. On-road is straight forward – go back to the road and cycle down to the lake. When the road comes close to the lake, look out for a road to your right, leading away gradually and upwards to High Mosser, with Mosser Fell on your right.

f.gif (706 bytes)or the off-road option, once back up to the road, turn left and after 300 yards, turn left again to Maggie’s Bridge, forking right just after the car park. You will follow the path, keeping right all round the lake until you meet the road. Turn right, with the Grange Hotel on your left, cycle down to just beyond the telephone box, and turn left onto bridleway. This becomes road after ½ mile and leads you to High Mosser with Mosser Fell to your right.

y.gif (716 bytes)our next village is Mosser Mains. You go down and through the village, turning right at the staggered junction to Catgill Bridge and Cringley Hill, climbing slowly over the top and down to Low Lorton.

Loweswater from Mosser Fell

c.gif (1081 bytes)ross the River Cocker at the mill and go straight over the main road and again at the next crossroad, bringing you back to the Post Office. If the extension route from Whinlatter has been used, take advantage of the forest trail back to the Visitor Centre, marked C2C.
