W.GIF (787 bytes)hen ‘Sustrans’* designed and built the C2C (Coast to Coast) cycleway, besides The Old Coach Road - the tough option – they mapped two other gentle routes out of Keswick, heading towards Penrith. This route uses both of them, one to take us out and the other as the return. For further information on the C2C, click on Long Distance Routes.

Route Description.

Mungrisdale - Route Map S.GIF (708 bytes)tart: Keswick Leisure Pool. Take the old railway track and after one mile, climb the steps on your left just after a concrete road bridge to join A5271 and head uphill away from Keswick. Bear left after 200 yards and then first right, following the C2C (Coast to Coast) signs, also signposted "Castlerigg Stone Circle", a steady climb for around 1 mile.

O.GIF (754 bytes)nce over the top, bear left for Threlkeld. You will have to cross over the A66 – take care! Once across, turn right and

C.GIF (1081 bytes)ontinue along this lane for 1½ miles to a sharp left turn. At this point you can take a short cut across a field (you must dismount), avoiding a steep climb. If you stay on the lane, you will turn right at the next junction then right again for Wallthwaite. Continue on to Troutbeck, turning left at the A5091 and left again at the A66, joining the C2C cycle track on the opposite side for a little under a mile. Take great care crossing this major road.

T.GIF (1079 bytes)urn right towards Mungrisdale, a pretty village with excellent pub if you are ready for a break and refreshments. The church here, St. Kentigern’s, is worth a visit, having an unusual three decker pulpit. The present church was built in 1756 although a church had existed here since AD 552. You can cross the River Glenderamackin by a footbridge just below the Inn or turn left at the junction shortly after you see The Mill Inn on your left.
Castlerigg Stone Circle S.GIF (708 bytes)taying on the Inn side of the river, continue along this lane which will take you along the edge of Souther Fell on a gated path with Blencathra (or Saddleback) to your right. After two miles, you will re-join the cycleway at Scales.

F.GIF (706 bytes)ollow this path down the hill and off to the right, back through the wood and down through Threlkeld to the A66, the point where you first crossed. This time, stay with the C2C path which takes you down onto the old railway track by the River Greta. This is a lovely ride but there are several gates and some steps to climb to bring you up to the level of the A66 viaduct before the track descends into Keswick and back to the start.
