ay two of the Reivers route leaves the Lake District and meanders towards
Carlisle on minor roads, taking you out on the flatlands of the Solway before reaching the
city.

he alternative is to take the shorter Penrith-Carlisle "link route"
after Dalston, thereby making time to visit the Tullie House museum, which has a fine
display not only of Roman relics from Hadrians Wall, but also an exhibition regarding the
Reivers themselves. A new signed cycleway alongside the River Caldew is to be
completed shortly.

pposite the museum is Carlisle Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots
was incarcerated following her abdication from the Scottish throne, and where supporters
of Bonnie Prince Charlie's 1745 rebellion were led out and hanged by the Duke of
Cumberland.

rom Carlisle, the land begins to rise steadily again through tiny villages and
across open countryside.
our third night's accommodation will be at Bailey Mill, an isolated working
farm with excellent accommodation and even a Jacuzzi to relax those tired muscles. Evening
meals are available and there is also a well stocked bar.
