D.gif (679 bytes)ay two of the Reivers route leaves the Lake District and meanders towards Carlisle on minor roads, taking you out on the flatlands of the Solway before reaching the city.

T.gif (679 bytes)he alternative is to take the shorter Penrith-Carlisle "link route" after Dalston, thereby making time to visit the Tullie House museum, which has a fine display not only of Roman relics from Hadrians Wall, but also an exhibition regarding the Reivers themselves. A new signed cycleway alongside the River Caldew is to be completed shortly.

O.gif (754 bytes)pposite the museum is Carlisle Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was incarcerated following her abdication from the Scottish throne, and where supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie's 1745 rebellion were led out and hanged by the Duke of Cumberland.
