Maintenance checks

j.gif (630 bytes)f you intend to take your own bike on one of our organised rides, there are a few maintenance checks, that would be advisable for you to go through. A bike in good condition will markedly reduce the chances of you needing any of the tools or spares that you take on the ride.

t.gif (1079 bytes)he most basic check should include the following:

Brake Check Check that you can get a good sharp breaking response from pulling break leavers only a short distance (1-2cm)
Check that front & rear brake cables are not frayed or worn, and move freely. If they are damaged, replace them straight away.
Check that the break blocks come into contact with the rim and not the tyre and that there is plenty of wear left in the block
Tyres Make sure that your tyres are in good condition with adequate tread and inflated to the manufacturers recommendations (usually about 40psi)
Make sure the following moving parts are properly lubricated. Front and rear brake pivots.
Front and rear gear mechanisms.
Chain
Brake lever pivots
Entry and exit points on brake and gear cables.
Gear Shifting Check that gears are shifting properly while riding the bike.

General Tightening

Finally check that all appropriate screws and bolts are tight.
